Deciding to explore the abandoned house together, Simmons captures the aloof ennui and deep curiosity of being a teenager. This adventurous, silent graphic novel demonstrates the solid strength of this young cartoonist and his storytelling ability. STARS OF THE MONTH

SAFE AREA GORAZDE SC by Joe Sacco In softcover for the first time, Safe Area Gorazde is Joe Sacco's 240-page opus about the war in the former Yugoslavia. Sacco spent four months in Bosnia in 1995-1996, immersing himself in the human side of life during wartime, researching stories rarely found in conventional news coverage. The book focuses on the Muslim enclave of Gorazde, which was besieged by Bosnian Serbs during the war. Features an introduction by Christopher Hitchens. (STAR14887) MATURE THEMES SC, B&W SRP: $19.95

BUT I LIKE IT HC by Joe Sacco Follow award-winning cartoon journalist Joe Sacco on one of the most dangerous beats of all: rock ’n’ roll! The centerpiece of the book is an expanded version of “In the Company of Long Hair,” the early '90s graphic novelette Sacco created on the subject of his raucous European tour with the punk band, the Miracle Workers. "Long Hair" appears here for the first time in an expanded version with an added 15-page section of his original sketches and notes from the time, and a bound-in CD featuring an excerpt from the Miracle Workers' live shows — including a blasting version of the Iggy Pop classic, "I Got a Right." As for the rest of the book: Sacco turns his pitiless pen on all strata of Rock 'n' Roll, from old rockers (two stories on the Rolling Stones) to new; from salacious gossip to how-to ("Woodstock in your Own Home"); from portraits of typical rock creatures ("Record Producer," "The Musician Who Wanted to Save the World," "The Rock Journalist") to self-deprecating autobiographical stories. (MAR063202) HC, 7x10, 120pgs, PC SRP: $24.95

O/A NOTES FROM A DEFEATIST GN by Joe Sacco Before Joe Sacco crafted his two major works of “cartoon journalism” — Palestine and Safe Area Gorazde — he created a number of shorter pieces, ranging from one-page gags to 30-page “graphic novelettes.” This massive book finally collects the entirety of Sacco’s earlier journalistic and autobiographical work, plus a sizable serving of his satirical strips. MATURE THEMES SC, B&W SRP: $19.95

PERCY GLOOM HC by Cathy Malkasian Cathy Malkasian has made the jump from animation to the printed page with a graceful, delicate leap. Humorous and bewitching at the same time, Percy Gloom is a unique gem of a story. Occupying an unreal world of secret societies, benevolent families, and bureaucratic security, lazy-eyed Percy Gloom fights to overcome the loss of his wife, Lila, to a truth-pointing, lotharian, cult-leader. Approached by his doctor to help protect some special people and given advice by some talking goats, Percy comes to terms with his place in the gloomy world and finds himself reaching enlightenment (literally). HC, 8x10, 150pgs, B&W SRP: $18.95

THREE PARADOXES HC by Paul Hornschemeier The Three Paradoxes is an intricate and complex autobiographical comic by one of the most talented and innovative young cartoonists today. The story begins with a story inside the story: the cartoon character Paul Hornschemeier is trying to finish a story called “Paul and the Magic Pencil.” He isn’t coming up with much and — abandoning the comic strip temporarily — Paul leaves with his camera in order to fulfill a promise to his girlfriend that he would take pictures of the places that affected him as a child. Each “chapter” of the story is drawn in a completely different style, with strikingly unique production and color themes, and yet, somehow, despite this non-linear progression, it all comes together as one story: a story questioning change, progress, and worth within the author’s life.
